Engine Diagnostics: Why Is My Check Engine Light On?
By: Luke Shaff ~ 10/6/2016

There are literally hundreds of different reasons why your Check Engine Light might come on.  This is why it's so important that you work with an auto technician to identify your car's specific problem.  Your technician will likely run an engine diagnostic that reads the data stored in your car's computer to pinpoint the type of car maintenance required.  While there are many possible reasons your Check Engine Light is on, here are four of the most common problems you might need to address.

1. Your Gas Cap is Damaged

If your gas cap is damaged, missing, or even loose it can cause your Check Engine Light to activate.  This is a relatively minor problem, but one that you will certainly want to fix quickly.  Driving without a gas cap is bad for the environment and negatively impacts your gas mileage.

2. You Need to Replace a Spark Plug

A broken or malfunctioning spark plug can result in your car not starting or performing properly.  If left unattended, further damage can occur, so speak with an auto technician to have this checked and replaced quickly.

3. There's a Problem with Your Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor

Mass air flow sensors determine the fuel-to-oxygen ratio required to run your car engine appropriately.  It's possible for the sensor to become faulty, but issues will also occur if the sensor is loose or dirty.

4. The Catalytic Converter Needs Replacing

Catalytic converters are essential for minimizing the impact your car has on the environment. If yours needs to be replaced, do so as soon as possible. Neglecting to do so will cause your car to be less fuel efficient, as well as result in failed emissions tests.
